This photograph by Steven Silverstein was originally the cover for the first Chaussure edition of the avant-garde fashion magazine Depeche Mode, photographed in Paris in 1976.

Ignite exhibition - November 5 - 28, 2021, Janssen Artspace Gallery, Palm Springs, California. Divine. 43” x 53”, archival inks on Hahnemuhle paper, mat, framed. Edition of 25.

Steven Silverstein photographed Harris Glenn Milstead (aka drag queen “Divine”) in New York City in 1980. An image from the session was syndicated to People magazine and later curated by Time Inc’s editors for the Special Collector’s book among 200 photos from over 165,000 that had appeared in the magazine.

In honor of ELLE magazine’s 75th Anniversary, among the “140 iconic covers” curated from more than four thousand in ELLE’s archives over the past seventy-five years, were Steven Silverstein’s May 1990 Spanish ELLE cover of model Judit Mascó and the March 24, 1986 French ELLE cover of Ashley Richardson (Montana).
